Payment Reminder SMS and EMI Reminder SMS That Get Paid on Time
Our payment reminder SMS and EMI reminder SMS tell customers what is due, by when and how to pay, with a whitelisted UPI or payment link. Use one ladder of messages before, on and after the due date, then confirm receipt.

A payment reminder SMS tells a customer the amount due, the due date and how to pay, usually with a payment link. EMI reminder SMS do the same for loan instalments. Both are service messages under DLT and reach DND numbers. Keep wording factual, polite and free of threats, especially for overdue accounts.

Who uses payment reminder SMS
Any business that bills on a schedule loses money when customers forget. A payment reminder SMS fixes the forgetting part. Broadband providers remind subscribers before a plan expires. Apartment associations remind owners about maintenance. Chit fund companies, gyms, coaching centres and SaaS firms remind customers about renewals. Distributors remind retailers about invoices past their credit period.
Lenders use EMI reminder SMS for loan instalments, NACH mandate dates and bounce follow-ups. The same ladder of messages works for all of them; only the wording and timing change.
A reminder ladder that works
Plan the sequence around the due date rather than sending one blast to everyone on the same day.
- 5 to 7 days before: friendly notice with amount, due date and pay link.
- 1 day before: short reminder, especially for auto-debit accounts to keep balance.
- Due date: payment due today, with the link.
- 1 to 3 days after: overdue notice with any late fee as per your terms.
- On payment: receipt SMS with amount, date and reference number.

Compliance for collections and lenders
Payment reminders for an existing account are service messages. Register them under service implicit with a -S header. They can reach DND numbers, but schedule them in daytime hours. RBI-regulated lenders and their recovery agents must follow RBI's fair practices and recovery conduct expectations: no threats, no abusive language, no contact at odd hours and no disclosure of the debt to family or neighbours.
Do not put legal threats in an SMS template. Quote only fees and terms the customer agreed to. Payment links must be whitelisted on DLT; public shorteners are blocked. Never ask for card numbers, PINs or OTPs in a reminder, because fraudsters copy that pattern.
Writing reminders that people act on
Put the amount and date first, the payment method second and your brand name last. Customers often read only the lock screen preview, which shows only the first line or two. Mention the account ending digits or invoice number so they know which bill it is, especially if they have several.
Add an Ignore if already paid line to advance and due-date reminders. It avoids angry replies from customers whose payment is still being processed. Stop the ladder as soon as payment is received; sync your billing system with our API so that a paid customer never gets an overdue notice.
Adding WhatsApp, RCS and voice
WhatsApp utility messages can carry the invoice PDF and a Pay Now button, at ₹0.12 to ₹0.16 per message on our plans. RCS shows a verified business card with a payment button on Android. For overdue accounts that do not respond to text, a polite voice call with the amount and due date helps. SMS stays the base channel because it is read on every phone and leaves a clear record of what was sent.
Compare the share of customers who pay by the due date before and after you start the ladder, using your own billing data.

Frequently asked questions
Is a payment reminder SMS promotional or transactional?
It is a service message, because it relates to an existing account or bill. File it in the service implicit category and send it from your -S header. It reaches DND numbers and is not restricted to the 10am to 9pm window, although sending in daytime is more courteous and expected for collections.
How many EMI reminder SMS should a lender send?
A common pattern is one reminder about five days before the due date, one a day before, one on the due date and a follow-up if payment fails. Keep each reminder factual, without threats. RBI-regulated lenders should follow RBI's fair practices and recovery conduct expectations when contacting borrowers.
Can I add a UPI payment link to a reminder SMS?
Yes, if the link uses a domain whitelisted on your DLT portal. Since October 2024, public shorteners and unregistered URLs are blocked. A short link on your own domain that opens your payment page or UPI intent is the safest option and looks more trustworthy to customers.
Can reminders be personalised for each customer?
Yes. Templates support variables up to 30 characters each, such as name, amount, due date, account ending digits and link. Upload an Excel or CSV file with one row per customer, or send through our API from your billing system, and each person gets their own amounts and dates.
What does a payment reminder SMS cost?
Each delivered SMS is ₹0.20 on Starter or ₹0.15 on Business, plus 18% GST, with no monthly fee. A business with 2,000 customers sending a four-step ladder uses about 8,000 SMS a month, which fits the Starter plan. Undelivered messages are not billed, and you can stop anytime.
