Order and Delivery SMS Alerts That Answer Where Is My Order
Set up order and delivery SMS alerts that tell customers what they bought, when it ships and when it arrives. Each alert is triggered by your order system, uses an approved service template and costs only when delivered.

Order and delivery SMS alerts are automatic text messages sent when an order changes status: placed, confirmed, packed, dispatched, out for delivery, delivered, cancelled or refunded. They go on the service route with DLT-approved templates, reach DND numbers, and can include a tracking link on your own whitelisted domain.
Event-based triggers
Every status change in your system can fire one clear SMS.
Fits in 160 characters
Templates designed to stay in one SMS part to control cost.
Delivery slot messages
Confirm time windows for groceries, furniture and appliance installs.
Fewer where-is-my-order calls
Customers check the SMS instead of calling your support line.
Designing order and delivery SMS alerts customers want
More messages do not always mean better service. Order and delivery SMS alerts work best when each one answers a question the customer would otherwise call you about. For most businesses, four messages cover it: order confirmed, dispatched, out for delivery and delivered. Add cancellation and refund alerts as needed.
The right set depends on what you sell. A cloud kitchen needs order accepted and rider on the way, both within an hour. A pharmacy needs prescription verified and packed. A furniture or appliance store needs a delivery date, a slot confirmation the day before and an installation technician's name.
Writing templates that fit DLT rules
Every alert must match an approved service template. A few rules save repeated rejections and extra cost.
- Keep each variable within 30 characters, so trim long product names to a short label.
- Aim for one SMS part: 160 characters in English, 70 in Tamil or Hindi.
- Use only whitelisted tracking links on your own domain or your courier's registered domain.
- Keep offers out of service templates; send them separately on the promotional route.
- End with your brand name so the customer knows who the message is from.

Connecting your order system
Most order systems can call a URL when an order changes status. Point that call to our REST API with the template ID and variable values. WooCommerce and WordPress stores can use a plugin or webhook. Shopify, Zoho and Google Sheets based order books can connect through Zapier or Pabbly Connect.
Avoid duplicates. If your courier partner already sends shipment SMS under its own header, decide which messages you send and which they send. Our delivery reports return to your server by webhook, so you can show the SMS status next to each order for your support team.
Handling cancellations, returns and refunds
Customers worry most when something goes wrong. A clear cancellation or refund SMS prevents repeat calls and chargeback requests. State what happened, the amount and when the money will reach them, using the timelines your payment provider gives you.
For returns, send a pickup scheduled alert with the date and the pickup agent's contact, then a refund initiated alert once the item passes your check. Keep the refund reference number in the message so the customer can quote it to their bank if needed. If an item is out of stock after the order is placed, send the alert at once with options to wait or cancel.
Timing, WhatsApp and RCS
Service alerts may go at any hour, but a dispatch alert at 2am wakes people for no reason. Queue non-urgent updates such as dispatch for the morning, while time-critical alerts like a rider arriving go out immediately.
Add WhatsApp when customers need an invoice PDF, a reorder button or a chat about a damaged item, at ₹0.12 to ₹0.16 per utility message on our plans. On Android, RCS can display your logo with a one-tap tracking button. Keep SMS as the fallback so every customer gets the update.
Sending outside India too?
We also send SMS and WhatsApp messages to customers abroad, with help on each country's sender ID and consent rules.

Frequently asked questions
Are order alerts transactional or promotional SMS?
Order alerts are service messages, because they relate to a purchase the customer made. Register them under the service category with a -S header. They reach DND numbers at any time. If you add a discount code for the next purchase, that part is promotional and must go in a separate promotional template.
How many SMS should I send per order?
Send only the updates a customer would otherwise ask about. For most stores that means confirmed, dispatched, out for delivery and delivered, plus cancellation or refund if it happens. Food delivery and same-day services may skip dispatch. Fewer, clearer messages keep cost down and keep customers reading them.
Can I include a tracking link in delivery SMS?
Yes, if the URL is whitelisted on your DLT portal. Since 1 October 2024, links from public shorteners and unregistered domains are blocked. Use a short path on your own domain, such as yourbrand.in/t/12345, which also looks more trustworthy to customers.
Can customers reply to an order alert?
Yes, with two-way SMS. Customers can reply with a keyword such as R to reschedule or C to cancel, and the reply reaches your panel or your server by webhook. This works well for delivery slot confirmations and installation appointments.
What do order and delivery alerts cost?
Each delivered SMS costs ₹0.20 on Starter or ₹0.15 on Business, plus 18% GST. Undelivered messages are not billed. There is no monthly fee, and plans start at 5,000 SMS, so a small restaurant or a growing D2C brand pays only for what it needs.
