Why businesses pick a bulk SMS provider in Nigeria with clear reporting

Nigeria has a large fintech and e-commerce scene, and SMS carries a heavy load: login OTPs, transfer alerts, loan reminders, delivery codes and exam results. Lagos startups, Abuja schools, Port Harcourt oil service firms and Kano traders all depend on messages that arrive within seconds.

The common complaint is messages that show as sent but never arrive. That usually comes down to sender ID or DND rules. We focus on getting those right and on showing you real delivery status. AvanceZone Technology has run bulk SMS since 2000 and sends Nigerian traffic through global carrier partners.

Nigeria SMS rules: sender IDs and DND

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) sets the rules, and each network applies them. Rules change often, so we confirm the current position at onboarding. Based on published guidance:

  • Alphanumeric sender IDs of up to 11 characters are registered before use, with approval from each network such as MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile.
  • An approved sender ID is tied to its stated purpose. Use separate IDs for transactional and promotional messages.
  • Subscribers on the NCC Do-Not-Disturb list can block promotional SMS, and operators drop promotions to them, often silently.
  • OTPs, account alerts and order updates can reach DND numbers on transactional routes.
  • Promotional SMS is generally limited to 8am to 8pm West Africa Time, and needs consent and a working opt-out.

Content and language tips

English is the business language across Nigeria and works for most alerts. Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo messages can connect better in local campaigns. Write them in Latin script without special accents to stay within 160 characters per part, or accept Unicode at 70 characters if you need the tone marks.

Keep OTP messages free of promotional wording. A code message that adds a sales line can be classed as promotional and filtered. Store when and how each customer gave consent, in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

When to use WhatsApp in Nigeria

WhatsApp is the leading chat app in Nigeria, and many customers prefer to talk to businesses there. For customer care, sending receipts, catalogues or chatbot flows, the WhatsApp Business API is often the better channel, and DND rules for SMS do not apply. We are a Meta Tech Provider. Keep SMS for OTPs and alerts to customers who are not on WhatsApp or have poor data coverage.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register a sender ID in Nigeria?

Yes, in practice. Nigerian networks usually require alphanumeric sender IDs to be registered before use, and approval is given network by network. Unregistered IDs may be rejected or replaced with a numeric sender. With complete documents, approval often takes a few business days. We help you prepare and submit the request.

What is DND in Nigeria and how does it affect SMS?

DND is the NCC Do-Not-Disturb registry. Subscribers can block all promotional SMS or certain categories by texting the 2442 short code. Promotional messages to DND numbers are dropped by operators, often without an error. Transactional messages such as OTPs can still reach them on proper routes.

Why are my OTPs not delivered in Nigeria?

Common causes are an unregistered sender ID, using a promotional route for OTPs, or adding marketing text to the code message so it is filtered. Check delivery reports, not just send status. We review your route and template during onboarding to fix these issues.

What time can I send promotional SMS in Nigeria?

Published guidance places promotional SMS between 8am and 8pm West Africa Time. Transactional messages such as OTPs and alerts are not tied to these hours. Our panel lets you schedule campaigns in Nigerian time, so you do not need to convert from Indian time when planning a weekend promotion.

How is bulk SMS to Nigeria priced?

Nigeria SMS is billed per message and quoted by destination, in INR or USD on request. Rates differ for transactional and promotional traffic and depend on volume. Share your expected volume and message types, and we will send you a written quote.
